Need ready-to-load airport geography for Kibana Maps demos, travel analytics, or geospatial investigations? This pack gives you worldwide airport points and OpenStreetMap-derived aerodrome outlines so you can drop real GeoJSON layers into Elastic Maps without building the dataset yourself.
Use it when you want to prototype map layers quickly, overlay airport locations or ground outlines on operational data, or teach GeoJSON upload and styling with substantial, realistic features instead of tiny toy samples.
What problem it solves
Building trustworthy airport geography takes time: gathering points, outlines, IATA/ICAO codes, and country/region fields from open sources, then shaping them for Elastic Maps. This package ships curated GeoJSON so you can focus on map design, indexing, and analysis instead of data prep.
When to use it
- You are creating or demoing Kibana Maps layers with real airport geography.
- You need point locations for airports, heliports, seaplane bases, and balloonports worldwide.
- You want polygon outlines of airport grounds, including a smaller major-aerodrome subset for faster uploads.
- You plan to index GeoJSON into Elasticsearch and style layers in Maps (or reuse the files in other GeoJSON-capable tools).
What is included
airports.geojson— 86,067 point features with name, type, ISO country/region, municipality, elevation, and scheduled-service flags.airport-outlines.geojson— 22,821 MultiPolygon aerodrome outlines from OpenStreetMap, with name, IATA/ICAO, aerodrome type, OSM ids, and area.airport-outlines-major.geojson— 7,479-feature major/notable subset of the outlines file for lighter uploads.README.md— schemas, Kibana Maps upload steps, CLI indexing notes, and optional MapTiler satellite basemap guidance.
Who it helps
Kibana practitioners, observability and security teams building location context, solution architects preparing geospatial demos, and anyone who needs open airport GeoJSON ready for Elastic Maps or Elasticsearch.
How to get started
- In Kibana, open Maps and create a new map.
- Add layer → Upload GeoJSON → choose a file from this pack (start with
airport-outlines-major.geojsonif you want a faster first upload). - Follow the prompts to index into Elasticsearch and style the layer.
File sizes are large (up to about 30 MB uncompressed). Prefer streaming-friendly tooling for bulk processing, and consider the major-outlines subset when iterating on styling.
Compatibility
The source README does not state a specific Elastic Stack version. Compatibility was checked and intentionally left unset. The files are standard GeoJSON (WGS84 / EPSG:4326) for Elastic Maps GeoJSON upload and any GeoJSON-compatible consumer.
